NuWay-K&H Cooperative is proud to be a leading participant in a new pilot program that demonstrates how low carbon nitrogen fertilizer can play a key role in reducing the carbon intensity of corn and enabling the production of low carbon ethanol.
This pilot, launched by CF Industries and POET in collaboration with WinField United, brings together key players in the agriculture supply chain to track certified low carbon ammonia from production to field application and, eventually, to ethanol production. NuWay-K&H is the first retailer in Minnesota to successfully apply this certified fertilizer to corn acres during the Fall 2025 season.
Low carbon ammonia is manufactured using the same natural gas-based process as traditional fertilizer, but with one critical difference — the carbon dioxide generated during production is captured and permanently stored underground. This process significantly reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with ammonia production, which is one of the largest contributors to the lifecycle carbon footprint of corn and bioethanol.
By participating in this pilot, NuWay-K&H is helping to validate a supply chain that could open new doors for growers including access to value-added, certified low carbon corn markets.
“This trial provides an additional pathway to reduce the carbon intensity of our bioethanol, delivering both environmental and economic benefits for rural communities,” said Christian McIlvain, President of POET Grain.
This pilot aligns with NuWay-K&H Cooperative’s ongoing focus on providing innovative, forward-looking solutions to our growers. As the industry evolves, we remain committed to staying at the forefront of sustainable agriculture and carbon market opportunities.
