The 2024 growing season was an interesting year—from early season record rainfalls to late summer/early fall drought. Both corn and soybean yields were affected by the extreme weather conditions.
As the current crop year ends, let’s make a fresh start in 2025. One of the most important decisions for the success of your farming operation in the coming crop year is seed selection.
Start by inventorying your field characteristics:
- Drainage — Is my land poorly drained or well-drained?
- Soil Types — Am I farming rich black soils or courser, less-productive soils?
- Pests — What is my previous experience with disease and insect pressure?
- Fertility — Have I tested my soil’s nutrient levels?
Regarding your management style, ask yourself “Am I pursuing high-end yields with maximum inputs, or do I strive for optimal yields with a less intensive approach?”
Finally, when selecting seed, ask “Am I relying on quality yield data and genetic information?” Study yield trials from various locations and gather as many quality sources of information as possible. Look for a trusted source of data and genetics that will work on your farm along with your management style.
